In a significant diplomatic development, Finland has expressed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as a viable foundation to resolve the long-standing Sahara conflict. This endorsement was articulated during a recent meeting between Finnish and Moroccan officials, highlighting the growing international backing for Morocco’s proposal.

The Finnish Foreign Ministry emphasized that Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, first introduced in 2007, offers a pragmatic and credible framework for achieving a lasting resolution to the Sahara dispute. The plan proposes granting significant autonomy to the region while maintaining Moroccan sovereignty, a solution that has garnered increasing support from various global actors.

During the bilateral discussions, Finnish representatives underscored the importance of a peaceful and negotiated settlement, aligning with the United Nations’ efforts to mediate the conflict. They reiterated Finland’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote stability and cooperation in the region.

Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, welcomed Finland’s stance, noting that it reflects a broader international consensus on the viability of the Autonomy Plan. He highlighted that the plan’s emphasis on regional governance and self-determination aligns with global principles of conflict resolution and sustainable development.

The endorsement from Finland adds to the growing list of countries and international organizations that view Morocco’s proposal as a constructive step towards ending the decades-long impasse. This support is seen as a testament to Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to garner international backing for its approach to the Sahara issue.

As the international community continues to seek a resolution to the Sahara conflict, Finland’s support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan underscores the plan’s potential to serve as a foundation for peace and stability in the region.
