In a remarkable testament to Morocco's contributions to astronomy and space science, a growing number of the nation's researchers and enthusiasts are finding their names etched among the stars. On August 22, 2024, Abdelkrim Boskri became the latest addition to this prestigious group, with asteroid 176532 bearing his name in recognition of his outstanding work at the Oukaïmeden Observatory.

This celestial honor roll showcases the breadth and depth of Moroccan talent in the field of astronomy. Dr. Zouhair Benkhaldoun, honored with asteroid 133892 "Benkhaldoun," stands out as a pioneer. As the founder of Morocco's first professional astronomical observatory and a key figure in the discovery of the TRAPPIST-1 exoplanet system, Benkhaldoun exemplifies the nation's growing influence in astrophysics.

The list continues with Youssef Moulane, whose journey from studying asteroid detection to researching comets at the European Southern Observatory is commemorated by asteroid 33903 "Moulane." Dr. Hasnaa Chennaoui Aoudjehane, the first woman in Morocco and the Arab world to earn a degree in planetary science, is celebrated with asteroid 299020 "Chennaoui."

Other notable honorees include Ahmed Daassou, Taha Shisseh, Mohamed Lazrek, and Abdelmajid Benhida, each contributing significantly to various aspects of astronomy and astrophysics. The recognition extends beyond academia, with asteroid 399745 "Ouchaou" named after Omar Ouchaou, a technician whose 33-year dedication to the Oukaimen Observatory has been instrumental to its success.

The roster also includes individuals who have made substantial contributions to astronomy outreach and education. Mohamed Ali Hafili, founder of Astronomy Marrakech, and Hila Omar, a businessman whose cultural center houses Morocco's largest telescope, are among those whose passion for astronomy has earned them a place in the night sky.

This celestial roll call not only honors individual achievements but also highlights Morocco's growing prominence in the global astronomical community. From groundbreaking research to public engagement, these Moroccan luminaries are inspiring a new generation of stargazers and scientists, ensuring that Morocco's contributions to our understanding of the universe will continue to shine brightly for years to come.
