Marrakech is grappling with escalating climate threats, including drought, extreme heat, flooding, and sandstorms, according to a recent report by the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA). The city's vulnerability to climate change is leading to severe impacts, such as food and water shortages, increased respiratory diseases, and economic instability.

The report, part of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), highlights that Marrakech's major climate risks are exacerbating health issues, reducing labor productivity, and disrupting ecosystems. With its economy heavily reliant on tourism, the city faces further challenges as rising temperatures and drought may deter visitors, threatening livelihoods.

Population growth and social inequalities amplify these risks, particularly affecting young people, women, and migrants. To enhance resilience, the GCA suggests several adaptation strategies, including:

- Integrated Urban Planning: Developing participatory architecture to create resilient public spaces.
- Médina Pilot Project: Implementing measures for more sustainable urban environments.
- Climate Academy: Establishing educational initiatives for public action participants.
- Health Observatory: Creating a dedicated observatory to study climate impacts on health.
- Scientific Advisory Board: Improving access to climate change data.
- Tourism Adaptation Plan: Addressing potential economic losses in the tourism sector.

The AAAP, launched in 2021 by the GCA and the African Development Bank, aims to mobilize $25 billion by 2025 for adaptation efforts, focusing on food security, resilient infrastructure, youth entrepreneurship, and innovative finance. To date, it has influenced over $8.4 billion in investments, benefiting nearly 60 million people across 35 African countries.

The GCA emphasizes that accelerating adaptation is crucial as climate hazards intensify, providing a roadmap for necessary policies and investments to safeguard communities from climate impacts.
