In a resolute stride towards environmental sustainability, Morocco has made remarkable strides in addressing the pressing issue of household and assimilated waste management. The comprehensive efforts undertaken through the National Program for Household and Assimilated Waste have yielded tangible results, as revealed by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit during a recent session at the Chamber of Counselors.

One of the program's standout achievements is the establishment of 23 controlled landfills, serving the waste management needs of 154 municipalities across the Kingdom. Additionally, 66 existing uncontrolled dumpsites have undergone comprehensive rehabilitation, underscoring the nation's commitment to mitigating the adverse environmental impacts of improper waste disposal.

Minister Laftit highlighted the significant progress made in increasing the rate of waste burial, a crucial indicator of effective waste management. The current burial rate stands at an impressive 63%, a remarkable leap from a mere 10% in 2008, reflecting the program's efficacy in addressing a long-standing challenge.

Moreover, the initiative has yielded promising results in the realm of waste valorization and recycling. A total of 13 waste sorting and valorization centers have been established, laying the groundwork for a robust waste recycling system that aligns with Morocco's broader sustainable development goals.

Complementing these achievements, the program has also made substantial strides in enhancing waste collection and sweeping services in urban areas. Through the implementation of 122 delegated management contracts encompassing all Moroccan cities, particularly large and medium-sized urban centers, the collection and sweeping rate in urban zones has soared to an impressive 96%, a remarkable improvement from the 44% rate recorded in 2008.

As Morocco continues to chart its course towards a greener future, the National Program for Household and Assimilated Waste stands as a testament to the nation's unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. By fostering sustainable waste management practices, investing in cutting-edge infrastructure, and empowering local communities, Morocco is paving the way for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable tomorrow for its citizens and the generations to come.
