Chaos at Mohammed V Airport: Poor Crowd Management After Security Scanner Removal
Recent developments at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca have ignited a wave of criticism following chaotic scenes inside the terminal. The recent removal of security scanners, intended to alleviate long queue times, has instead led to a significant breakdown in crowd management, leaving passengers frustrated and bewildered.
Videos circulating on social media depict long lines and congested areas within the airport, where travelers, along with their families, are forced to navigate a disorganized and uncomfortable environment. The situation has rapidly escalated due to the absence of designated waiting areas and a lack of clear pathways for passenger movement.
This abrupt change has left many travelers grappling with confusion, particularly as they attempt to find their way through the terminal while waiting for arrivals. The lack of organization has not only increased stress for passengers but has also raised concerns regarding overall safety and comfort at one of Morocco’s most vital transportation hubs.
The National Airports Office (ONDA) recently made the controversial decision to remove security scanners and metal detectors from Mohammed V Airport, as well as Marrakech Menara Airport. This initiative aimed to address the persistent issue of long queues at both locations, part of the broader "Airports 2030" modernization plan. This plan is designed to enhance Morocco’s transportation infrastructure ahead of significant events such as the AFCON and FIFA World Cup 2030.
In a bid to improve the experience of travelers, ONDA stated that the relocation of inspection devices would facilitate quicker access to airport entry points, thereby streamlining the boarding process. However, the immediate aftermath has revealed a stark contrast to these intentions, with terminals becoming overcrowded and chaotic.
Despite ONDA's assurances of deploying additional personnel and equipment to manage the situation, public outcry continues to grow. Moroccans are calling for urgent improvements to be implemented before the influx of international visitors arrives for major global events.
As frustrations mount, there is an increasing demand for airport authorities to reassess these changes to ensure a smoother, more organized experience for travelers and their families in the future.
