Escalating Death Toll in Gaza Amid Israeli Military Offensive
The Israeli military's ongoing offensive in Gaza is resulting in an escalating number of civilian casualties and exacerbating humanitarian crises, with widespread malnutrition among children becoming increasingly prevalent.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, on Monday, dozens of Palestinian civilians lost their lives as Israel bombed the Al-Shifa medical complex in Gaza. Medical sources cited by Wafa reported a fire breaking out at the facility's gate, leading to cases of suffocation among displaced women and children seeking shelter there.
The Al-Shifa medical facility has been completely besieged by Israeli forces, severing communication for tens of thousands of displaced individuals trapped inside.
In addition to the hospital assault, Israeli forces carried out an airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp, resulting in the deaths of several civilians and injuring dozens more. Nine individuals perished, and multiple sustained injuries when a house in the camp was hit.
Since the offensive commenced on October 7, reports indicate that at least 326 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, with the number of injured reaching 3,792.
"A number of victims remain trapped under the rubble, inaccessible to rescue teams," stated Gaza's Health Ministry, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The devastating toll persists amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions. Recent UNICEF data reveals that over 1,300 children have lost their lives during the offensive. Many others are grappling with severe acute malnutrition, reaching a state where "they lack the energy to cry," as stated by UNICEF.
"Thousands more children have been injured, or their whereabouts are unknown. They could be trapped under debris... We haven't witnessed such a high rate of child fatalities in almost any other conflict worldwide," remarked UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell in an interview with CBS News.
