A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook the northeastern United States on Friday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey Institute (UGSS).

Several flights were grounded by the Civil Aviation Agency at JFK Airport in Queens, New York, and at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 72 km west of New York, according to the USGS.

The National Tsunami Warning Center indicated that there was no tsunami risk on the East Coast after the earthquake.

"My team is assessing the impacts and damages that may have occurred, and we will be informing the public throughout the day," said New York Governor Kathy Hochul on X.

A spokesman for New York Mayor Eric Adams said the earthquake had no major impact on the city.
