Morocco's transition toward digital payment methods has gained significant momentum, as evidenced by the substantial rise in mobile payments throughout 2022. This trend, indicating a departure from the nation's traditionally cash-focused culture, was highlighted in the third annual National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) report released on Saturday. The report outlines the rapid growth of M-Wallets services offered by banks and other financial institutions, with a remarkable 25% increase.

The report's data demonstrates that the total value of M-Wallets transactions rose dramatically from MAD 6.3 million (approximately $622,700) at the end of 2021 to MAD 7.7 million ($761,100) by the end of 2022. This surge illustrates the growing popularity of digital payment solutions among Moroccan consumers.

As the mobile payment landscape evolves, the report identified 22 distinct M-Wallet offerings by the end of 2022. Among them, 14 were provided by financial institutions focused on improving financial accessibility and convenience for their customers. Mobile payment institutions dominated the market, accounting for 73% of the total M-Wallet services. They processed MAD 5.8 million ($573,300) in transactions by the end of 2022, a notable increase from MAD 4.8 million ($474,400) at the end of the previous year.

A detailed analysis of transaction patterns revealed that bill payments comprised 71% of all transactions through M-Wallets, with person-to-person transfers representing 22% and merchant transactions making up 7%. Looking specifically at M-Wallets linked to bank accounts, bill payments maintained a strong lead, constituting 66% of all transactions. Transfers and ATM withdrawals accounted for 21% and 12%, respectively.

Despite the positive trends, Morocco continues to face challenges associated with a cash-intensive economy. A report from August 2022 revealed that Morocco ranks among the top 20 countries worldwide most reliant on cash payments, with 74% of transactions being cash-based.

However, the rapid adoption of M-Wallets offers a promising glimpse into Morocco's potential cashless future. As Moroccan consumers increasingly turn to digital payment solutions for their convenience and security, the country is on the path toward greater financial inclusion and technological advancement. The continued growth in mobile payments could transform Morocco's financial landscape, leading to more seamless and efficient transactions in the years ahead.
