Nigeria and Algeria advance to Women’s AFCON 2024 quarter-finals as Tunisia exit
Nigeria and Algeria secured their spots in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024, hosted in Morocco, after a goalless draw in their final Group B match held Sunday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
The result allowed Nigeria to top the group with seven points, while Algeria followed with five, both advancing to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, Tunisia’s hopes were dashed after a 2-1 defeat to Botswana at the Père Jégo Stadium. Despite taking an early lead through Yesmin Khanchouch in the 12th minute, the Tunisian side conceded two second-half goals — first to Lesego Radiakanyo in the 66th minute, and later to Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse in stoppage time (90+5).
With this result, Botswana finished third in the group with three points, while Tunisia ended in last place with just one point, thus eliminated from the tournament.
The competition now moves into the decisive phase, with Nigeria and Algeria poised to challenge for a spot in the semi-finals, as the 2024 Women’s AFCON continues to showcase the growing talent and competitiveness of African women’s football.
