Suicides among Israeli soldiers rise amid growing psychological pressure

The number of suicides among Israeli military personnel has reportedly increased since the beginning of 2026, raising renewed concerns about the psychological impact of prolonged military service and continued conflict.

According to a report by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, two female soldiers reportedly died by suicide during the same week, bringing the number of active-duty soldiers who have taken their own lives since the start of the year to 16.

The two latest cases reportedly involved soldiers serving in sensitive military positions. One was a combat soldier assigned to the Bardelas Battalion near Israel's border with Egypt, while the other reportedly served in a highly classified position within the Military Intelligence Directorate at the Glilot base near Ramat Hasharon.

The Israeli military has confirmed that military police opened investigations into the circumstances surrounding the two incidents. The findings are expected to be submitted to military prosecutors as part of the investigative process.

The reported figures also indicate that at least nine additional soldiers, including both regular and reserve personnel, died by suicide during the same period after leaving active service or while on leave. These figures highlight the potential psychological challenges faced by military personnel both during and after their service.

The situation follows a particularly difficult year for the Israeli military. In 2025, 22 soldiers reportedly died by suicide while serving on active duty, marking the highest annual figure recorded by the military in approximately 15 years.

Mental health specialists and Israeli reports have linked the rise in psychological distress among soldiers to the prolonged effects of military operations and exposure to combat across multiple fronts. Some personnel have reportedly experienced symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and other serious psychological difficulties.

The growing number of reported cases has intensified discussions about the availability and accessibility of mental health services within the military. Experts have emphasized the importance of early psychological intervention, effective support systems and long-term care for service members exposed to traumatic experiences.

The issue has become an increasingly important public health and military concern, as prolonged conflicts can place significant psychological pressure on soldiers and their families. The reported rise in suicides is likely to fuel further debate over how military institutions can strengthen mental health support and ensure that personnel receive appropriate assistance during and after their service.
