Goldman Sachs warns private credit risks outweigh oil price concerns

Goldman Sachs credit strategists say growing vulnerabilities in private credit markets pose a greater threat than rising oil prices linked to the US and Iran conflict, warning that current market stability may be misleading.

In a note released on March 20, the bank described the environment as “unstable stability,” arguing that resilience in credit markets is driven largely by investor expectations of future policy intervention rather than underlying strength.

Analysts said markets are shifting from pricing immediate shocks to assessing broader economic impact. Credit spreads in the financial sector have widened by 39 basis points since the start of the year, with debt linked to private credit firms such as Blue Owl Capital and FS KKR Capital underperforming.

Goldman pointed to what it called a “cockroach effect,” suggesting that visible stress in parts of the private credit sector likely signals deeper, hidden problems. The warning comes as tensions build in the 1.8 trillion dollar private credit market.

Several recent developments have reinforced concerns. Blue Owl suspended withdrawals from one of its retail-focused funds earlier this year, triggering a sharp selloff that erased a large portion of its market value. JPMorgan Chase has also reduced the valuation of software-backed loans tied to private credit funds, effectively tightening financing conditions.

According to Moody’s, US banks had extended nearly 300 billion dollars in loans to private credit providers by mid-2025, increasing interconnected risks between traditional banking and alternative lending markets.

Wall Street firms are now developing tools to allow investors to bet against the sector. Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have structured baskets of publicly traded companies exposed to private credit, offering hedge funds a way to take short positions in a market that is otherwise difficult to access. Bank of America is also involved in similar efforts.

Hedge funds have already increased bearish bets. In the week ending March 13, global funds aggressively shorted financial stocks, making the sector the most sold this year, according to Goldman data cited by Reuters.

Market observers warn the cycle may be nearing a turning point. Former Goldman Sachs chief executive Lloyd Blankfein said the opacity and illiquidity of private credit make it a likely source of broader market stress. He also highlighted risks for retail investors, who have gained increased access to the sector.

After years of rapid growth, private credit-linked asset managers have seen sharp declines in valuation, with firms such as KKR losing significant market value following earlier gains.
