Syrian President Ahmed al-Chareh reshuffles government and replaces his brother

Syrian President Ahmed al-Chareh carried out a partial government reshuffle on Saturday, replacing several senior officials and ministers, including his own brother, according to announcements published by Syria’s official news agency.

Among the most notable changes was the appointment of former Homs governor Abdel Rahman Badreddine Al-A'ma as secretary-general of the Syrian presidency, replacing Maher al-Chareh, the president’s brother. New appointments were also made within the ministries of information and agriculture, as well as in several provincial administrations.

The reasons behind the reshuffle were not officially explained, leading to speculation among political observers regarding internal power dynamics and the future direction of the Syrian transitional government.

The current administration was formed in 2025 following major political changes that reshaped the country after the end of the rule of former president Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. Since then, the transitional leadership has attempted to reorganize state institutions while facing economic difficulties and security challenges.

In addition to ministerial changes, new governors were appointed in several strategic provinces, including Homs, Quneitra, Latakia, and Deir ez-Zor. Analysts believe these appointments may reflect efforts to strengthen administrative control and consolidate authority across different regions.

The reshuffle comes at a sensitive moment for Syria as the country continues to navigate political reconstruction, regional diplomacy, and post-conflict recovery efforts after years of instability.

Observers are closely monitoring whether these changes will lead to broader reforms or signal a new phase in Syria’s political transition.
