Nobel economist challenges AI job loss warnings from Anthropic chief

Daron Acemoglu, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in economics, has sharply criticized claims that artificial intelligence could eliminate half of entry level white collar jobs within a few years. He described the warning from Dario Amodei as “motivated reasoning,” questioning the logic behind such projections given the continued push by AI firms to expand automation technologies.

The debate intensified after Yann LeCun publicly rejected the prediction, arguing that industry leaders often overstate the impact of technological shifts on employment. Amodei had previously warned that up to 50 percent of junior roles in sectors such as technology, law, consulting, and finance could disappear within one to five years due to rapid advances in AI systems. The exchange highlights a growing divide between economists who study labor markets and executives building AI tools.

Acemoglu does not dismiss the risks associated with automation but frames them differently. His research focuses on tasks rather than entire occupations, suggesting that AI is more likely to automate specific functions within jobs. He has estimated that around 5 percent of tasks could be automated, contributing less than 1 percent to GDP growth over a decade. Recent labor data indicates that job displacement linked to AI is already occurring, with more than 50,000 layoffs in the United States in 2025 directly attributed to automation out of 1.2 million total job cuts.

The pressure is most visible in roles involving routine processes or coding. Some technology companies are already integrating AI extensively into software development, with large portions of code being generated by machine learning systems. However, Acemoglu argues that forecasts of massive job losses often confuse technical capability with real world deployment, which depends on business incentives, regulatory frameworks, and institutional choices.

Amodei has maintained his position, warning that AI’s expanding cognitive capabilities could disrupt multiple industries simultaneously and limit workers’ ability to transition into new roles. He has called for policy responses, including progressive taxation of AI companies, to mitigate potential economic shocks. In contrast, Acemoglu advocates for a worker centered approach that emphasizes complementarity between humans and machines, arguing that long term economic gains depend on using AI to enhance human productivity rather than replace it.
