European stocks slip as oil surges on US Iran tensions

European equities edged lower on Thursday after reaching record highs a day earlier, as investors weighed a sharp rise in oil prices against escalating tensions between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The pan European Stoxx Europe 600 index fell 0.1 percent in early trading, hovering around 628 points after closing at an all time high on Wednesday. Britain’s FTSE 100 declined 0.3 percent, while Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 each slipped between 0.2 percent and 0.3 percent.

Oil prices jumped after diplomatic impasse

Crude prices rallied strongly on Wednesday, with both Brent and West Texas Intermediate climbing more than 4 percent to their highest closing levels since January 30. The surge followed comments from US Vice President JD Vance, who said Iran had failed to meet key American demands during nuclear negotiations in Geneva.

Speaking to Fox News, Vance said President Donald Trump was seeking a resolution through diplomatic means or other options, stressing that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon. He noted that while talks had in some respects progressed, Tehran had been unwilling to acknowledge certain red lines set by Washington.

Market participants have focused on the risk of supply disruptions, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route that handles about 20 percent of global oil flows. Analysts at ANZ said the possibility of interference with maritime traffic remained the main concern for energy markets. Iran partially restricted passage through the strait earlier this week during naval exercises conducted by the Revolutionary Guards, marking the first such move since Trump issued military warnings in January.

Defense shares outperform amid geopolitical strain

Despite Thursday’s pullback, European markets have been supported by gains in defense stocks as geopolitical risks intensify. The Stoxx 600 closed at record levels on Wednesday, led by a 5 percent rise in German defense contractor Rheinmetall. British defense group BAE Systems also advanced after reporting strong earnings.

The White House signaled that differences remain significant. Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said that although progress had been made in Geneva, the two sides were still far apart on several issues. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that Washington would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons by any means necessary.

The United States has deployed two aircraft carriers to the region, with the USS Abraham Lincoln positioned roughly 700 kilometers off the Iranian coast. Political risk consultancy Eurasia Group estimated there is a 65 percent probability of US military action against Iran before the end of April.

Mixed earnings temper investor sentiment

Corporate results also shaped trading in Europe. Airbus said it plans to deliver 870 commercial aircraft in 2026, slightly below analysts’ expectations of 880 deliveries. Shares in the aerospace manufacturer were closely watched as investors assessed the outlook for global aviation demand.

Nestlé rose 3.5 percent after reporting stronger than expected fourth quarter sales and announcing plans to divest its ice cream division. The update provided some support to consumer staples stocks amid broader market caution.

Attention has also turned to reports that European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde could step down before her term ends in October 2027. Analysts at Danske Bank said any leadership change would likely have limited impact on the central bank’s monetary policy stance.

The combination of surging oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and mixed corporate earnings has left European investors navigating a complex landscape, with energy markets and diplomatic developments between Washington and Tehran remaining central to near term market direction.
