European gas prices jump as us-iran standoff threatens lng chokepoint

European gas prices have surged as rising tensions between the United States and Iran revive fears of supply interruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for liquefied natural gas shipments from the Gulf. The Dutch TTF benchmark, Europe’s main gas price reference, climbed back above recent lows in mid-February, extending gains as traders priced in a renewed geopolitical risk premium linked to possible disruptions of Middle Eastern LNG flows. The move follows fresh military activity and sharper rhetoric around the long‑running standoff over Iran’s nuclear program, injecting new volatility into an already fragile European energy landscape.

Concerns focus on the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow maritime corridor at the mouth of the Gulf that carries roughly a fifth of global LNG trade, including exports from Qatar, the world’s second‑largest supplier. Any sustained interruption there could squeeze seaborne gas deliveries to Europe at a time when the continent is still recalibrating away from Russian pipeline supplies and remains heavily exposed to spot LNG markets. Analysts warn that even short‑lived disruption could trigger price spikes comparable to those seen after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, given the limited spare capacity elsewhere and the difficulty of rerouting cargoes on short notice.

The security backdrop has darkened after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched intensive naval drills in the Strait, a series of exercises described by state media as “Smart Control of Hormuz Strait” and aimed at testing readiness against perceived threats. The maneuvers coincide with a tougher line from Washington, where President Donald Trump has publicly pressed Tehran to accept new nuclear terms under an explicit, time‑bound warning while refusing to rule out military action. US deployments of additional naval assets in and around the Gulf, coupled with Iranian notices of planned rocket launches in southern airspace, have reinforced market fears of miscalculation in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive waterways.

For Europe, the flare‑up comes at a delicate moment. Gas storage sites in the EU entered 2026 at lower levels than a year earlier, leaving inventories more sensitive to cold spells in the first quarter and intensifying the scale of injections required ahead of the next winter. Industry data show that stocks started the year from a weaker base, reducing the buffer that helped shield European consumers from price shocks during the previous heating season. With the bloc’s regulation on mandatory storage targets due to lapse at the end of 2025, questions over future refill incentives are adding another layer of uncertainty to supply planning.

Market observers note that a significant loss of LNG from Qatar and other Gulf exporters, even temporarily, would force European buyers to bid aggressively against Asian utilities for remaining spot cargoes. Studies of a hypothetical closure of the Strait suggest that benchmark prices in Europe and Asia could again approach levels seen during the 2022 crisis, straining public finances and reviving concerns over industrial competitiveness. While most analysts still regard a prolonged shutdown as unlikely, the combination of heightened military activity, brittle diplomacy and thinner European storage has pushed energy security back to the forefront for policymakers, utilities and investors across the continent.
