Boualem Sansal Reignites Debate Over Morocco-Algeria Borders

The question of borders between Morocco and Algeria has returned to the spotlight following remarks by Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, reviving a sensitive historical debate with implications for relations between the two neighbouring countries.

The controversy reflects the enduring political weight of territorial questions in the Maghreb, where historical narratives, national identity and diplomatic tensions frequently intersect. Sansal’s comments have renewed discussion about how the region’s borders were established and how competing interpretations of the past continue to influence public debate.

The issue extends beyond historical scholarship. In Morocco and Algeria, discussions about territorial boundaries remain closely connected to national sovereignty, collective memory and the broader state of bilateral relations.

From Imprisonment to a Renewed Public Debate

The dispute has its roots in November 2024, when Sansal was arrested upon arriving at Algiers airport after travelling from France. His statements about the historical boundaries between Morocco and Algeria became central to a criminal case brought against him by the Algerian authorities.

In March 2025, he was sentenced to five years in prison. An appeals court upheld the sentence in July of that year. His detention prompted international reactions and brought renewed attention to the relationship between freedom of expression, national sovereignty and the treatment of controversial public figures in Algeria. He was released in November 2025 following a presidential pardon.

In his latest interview, Sansal also discussed the psychological consequences of imprisonment, describing the lasting effects of detention on his personal life. His account adds another dimension to a dispute that now encompasses historical interpretation, criminal proceedings and his stated intention to seek personal accountability.

A Sensitive Issue in Morocco-Algeria Relations

The renewed controversy illustrates how historical questions can acquire political significance when they intersect with national identity and disagreements between neighbouring states.

For Morocco and Algeria, the history of territorial boundaries remains a subject that requires careful examination of treaties, colonial records and the evolution of political authority. Public statements by prominent figures can bring these questions back into the news, but they do not replace the historical evidence needed to assess competing interpretations.

Sansal’s remarks have therefore reopened two distinct debates: how the modern border between the two countries developed, and whether the treatment he received from the Algerian authorities gives grounds for the legal action he says he intends to pursue.

The outcome of any future proceedings remains uncertain. Meanwhile, the controversy demonstrates how an individual writer’s statements can reignite wider discussions about historical memory, freedom of expression and the difficult relationship between political narratives and documented history in the Maghreb.
