As speculation mounts around a potential IPO for OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman has firmly dismissed this possibility for 2026. The head of the artificial intelligence company believes that the stakes related to AI safety make the current context unfavorable for such a move.

OpenAI will ultimately not take the leap into financial markets this year. Sam Altman confirmed that the company would not proceed with an IPO in 2026, particularly highlighting the growing concerns surrounding AI safety.

In an interview with the business magazine Fortune, the executive explained that the current environment does not seem appropriate for preparing such a significant operation. According to him, the debates and issues related to AI safety weigh more heavily today than the prospect of a listing.

"We still have a lot to do"

When directly asked about the possibility of an IPO in 2026, Sam Altman responded negatively. He also assured that OpenAI is not under any particular pressure to accelerate its arrival in the markets.

However, this decision does not mean that the company is giving up on a long-term IPO. The leader suggests that the project could be considered later, once current priorities have been further advanced.

OpenAI and Anthropic Aim for Record Valuations

The absence of an IPO in 2026 does not prevent OpenAI from pursuing large-scale development. The company is among the generative AI players whose financial prospects are attracting significant interest from investors.

Its main competitor Anthropic is also preparing for a potential IPO. Both companies have already confidentially submitted documents to U.S. authorities in anticipation of a future operation.

The market is closely watching their financial ambitions: both OpenAI and Anthropic are aiming for valuations that could approach $1 trillion. A potential listing would thus be one of the largest operations ever conducted in the tech sector.

For OpenAI, the timeline remains open. In 2026, Sam Altman's stated priority, however, remains the development of the company and the increasingly central issue of AI safety.
