Apple reportedly delays camera-equipped AirPods launch

Apple is reportedly postponing the launch of a new generation of AirPods equipped with cameras, despite months of speculation that the technology could be introduced during the company’s September 2026 product event.

The company is expected to unveil several new devices during its annual September event, including new iPhone models. However, according to recent reports from technology journalist Mark Gurman, the camera-equipped AirPods are no longer expected to be part of this year’s announcement.

Apple has reportedly been exploring the concept of adding cameras to its wireless earbuds for several years. Early reports about the project emerged in 2024, when analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that mass production could begin in 2026.

Expectations increased after reports of prototype development and testing circulated, fueling speculation that Apple was preparing to introduce the product this year. However, supply-chain challenges and software development issues are reportedly among the reasons behind the delay.

The project is also believed to involve advanced artificial intelligence and computer-vision capabilities. Cameras integrated into the earbuds could potentially allow the devices to identify objects and interpret elements of the user’s surroundings, although Apple has not officially confirmed the product or its planned features.

Reports have also suggested that Apple has been testing different versions of the device. Two internal model numbers, B790 and B798, have reportedly been associated with camera-equipped AirPods prototypes, with one version described as a new AirPods Pro model.

The launch timeline has changed several times in recent months. Earlier expectations pointed to 2026, while some reports later suggested a possible release in 2027. More recent speculation had briefly revived hopes of a launch this year before the latest reports indicated that the product would be delayed again.

Consumer reaction to the idea has also been mixed. Discussions on online forums have raised questions about the practical usefulness of cameras in earbuds, as well as privacy concerns and potential technical limitations. Users have also questioned how effectively cameras positioned on earbuds could capture the surrounding environment in everyday situations.

Apple has not announced an official release date for camera-equipped AirPods, making a 2027 launch possible but still uncertain. For now, the company appears to be prioritizing further development before bringing the technology to consumers.

If eventually released, camera-equipped AirPods could represent a significant expansion of Apple’s wearable-device strategy, combining audio technology with artificial intelligence, computer vision and contextual awareness.
