Morocco Fortifies Security for 2025 AFCON and 2030 World Cup
As Morocco gears up to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 World Cup, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) is implementing extensive measures to bolster security infrastructure and personnel preparedness. These initiatives, detailed in the DGSN's 2024 annual report, underscore the country's commitment to ensuring the safety and success of these high-profile sporting events.
A cornerstone of these efforts is the DGSN's participation in the "Stadia" project, spearheaded by Interpol. This project aims to foster international cooperation and enhance police capabilities in managing large-scale sports events. The DGSN is focusing on upgrading security services with advanced logistical resources, operational tools, and highly trained personnel to meet the demands of these global spectacles.
One of the key components of these preparations is the establishment of new specialized units, including canine police brigades in cities slated to host World Cup matches. These brigades will be deployed in Agadir, Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech, and Tangier to bolster security in areas with heightened public attention.
Additionally, a new police training school is scheduled to open in Marrakech on January 11, 2025, coinciding with the anniversary of the presentation of the Proclamation of Independence. This institution will play a pivotal role in training the next generation of law enforcement officers.
Morocco's preparations also include significant investments in advanced security measures and cutting-edge technologies. The DGSN's 2024 report highlights a record 95% crime-solving rate, alongside a decrease in thefts and assaults. However, there has been an increase in cybercrime and drug busts, prompting further enhancements in surveillance and response capabilities.
To this end, over 4,300 body-worn cameras have been issued to officers, with additional cameras installed in police vehicles. These cameras are linked to new command centers, enabling faster emergency responses. Furthermore, 26 drones have been deployed to patrol borders and combat crimes such as human trafficking and drug smuggling.
Looking ahead, the DGSN plans to open a new central headquarters in Rabat in 2025 and construct 19 new police stations in growing urban areas, including Nador, Al Hoceima, and Marrakech. These upgrades will further strengthen Morocco's security infrastructure, ensuring a safe and secure environment for both residents and visitors during the upcoming sporting events.
As Morocco prepares to welcome the world for the 2025 AFCON and the 2030 World Cup, these comprehensive security measures reflect the country's dedication to public safety and trust, setting the stage for successful and memorable tournaments.
