Morocco's Social Welfare System Garners UN Acclaim

In a recent development that has caught the attention of international observers, the United Nations has lauded Morocco's efforts to enhance and expand its social welfare system. This endorsement comes as the North African nation marks a significant milestone in its governance.

Li Junhua, Deputy Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs of the UN, expressed his admiration for Morocco's initiatives in an interview with MAP. "Morocco's endeavors to broaden the scope, adequacy, and inclusiveness of its social protection deserve commendation from all quarters," Junhua stated.

The UN official emphasized the effectiveness of Morocco's social protection measures in addressing poverty and reducing inequalities. He noted that these efforts have also contributed to progress in various sustainable development goals within the country.

Junhua highlighted the crucial role of Morocco's social protection measures during the COVID-19 crisis, particularly in supporting vulnerable groups. The country's approach to funding these major initiatives involves a robust combination of general public revenues and social contributions from the employment sector.

"These efforts constitute a good model for middle-income countries," Junhua remarked, pointing to Morocco's strategy as a blueprint for combating inequalities, promoting inclusion, and advancing towards universal social protection systems.

Morocco's response to recent crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Al Haouz earthquake, has been particularly noteworthy. The country implemented a range of measures, including:

1. Direct assistance to vulnerable individuals
2. Expansion of health insurance for informal sector workers
3. Wage subsidies for employees in the tourism sector
4. Support for businesses
5. Establishment of a Special Fund to manage the COVID-19 pandemic

These initiatives have played a crucial role in mitigating the social, economic, and health impacts of the pandemic, especially for vulnerable individuals and their families, while simultaneously supporting economic recovery.

In a related development, Morocco has taken steps to align its development goals with international standards. In 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and UN Resident Coordinator Nathalie Fustier signed the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) for 2023-2027. This framework serves as the foundation for planning and monitoring the implementation of UN activities in Morocco, with the aim of achieving the 2030 Development Agenda.

As Morocco continues to refine and expand its social welfare system, it stands as an exemplar for other middle-income nations seeking to address societal challenges and promote inclusive growth. The international recognition of these efforts underscores the significance of Morocco's approach in the global context of social development and economic progress.
