Chinese Robotics: Material Dominance Hindered by Lack of AI
China has now established itself as the undisputed giant in humanoid robot manufacturing on a global scale. By deploying an ambitious industrial model supported by massive public subsidies and an extremely dense supply network, the country produces nearly all of the physical units in circulation worldwide. However, the rapid rise of this material industry masks a major obstacle: software performance struggles to keep pace.
On the ground, the reality of factories and training centers highlights a glaring gap between assembly volume and the actual autonomy of machines. Guided by human operators, most humanoids perform repetitive tasks at a significantly slower speed than human work rates. While current models excel in demonstrating pre-programmed movements or entertainment, their ability to adapt to dynamic and unforeseen production environments remains limited.
The central issue lies in the development of true embodied artificial intelligence, capable of generalizing learning and processing visual and motor stimuli in real-time. As financial markets value companies in the sector at record levels, experts and industry leaders agree that the transition to full operational maturity will still take several years. Amid international trade tensions and risks of industrial overcapacity, China must now prove that its material hegemony can transform into a success of technological integration at the heart of globalized factories.
