China launches 24th batch of SatNet internet satellites
China has successfully launched another group of low-Earth-orbit satellites as part of its expanding SatNet project, highlighting Beijing’s efforts to develop an independent space-based internet infrastructure and strengthen its position in the global satellite communications sector.
The latest launch was carried out on August 16 from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan province. A Long March-12 (CZ-12) carrier rocket transported the new satellites into orbit, marking another step in China’s broader plan to build large-scale satellite constellations capable of providing internet and communications services.
The Long March-12 is a two-stage liquid-fuel rocket designed for missions to low Earth orbit. It is approximately 59 meters long and has a liftoff thrust of around 5,000 kilonewtons. According to available technical specifications, the launcher can carry more than 12 tonnes to low Earth orbit and at least six tonnes to sun-synchronous orbit.
The launch is part of China’s accelerating investment in low-orbit satellite networks. Such constellations are designed to operate hundreds or even thousands of satellites working together to provide broadband connectivity, particularly in areas where conventional telecommunications infrastructure is limited.
China’s SatNet program is developing alongside other major national space initiatives. Beijing has been expanding its capabilities in satellite communications, Earth observation, navigation and meteorology, while also pursuing ambitious lunar exploration projects.
The development of large satellite constellations has become an increasingly important area of competition in the global space industry. Low-Earth-orbit networks can offer lower communication delays than traditional geostationary satellites and have potential applications ranging from consumer internet services to emergency communications and remote connectivity.
China’s repeated SatNet launches demonstrate its determination to accelerate the deployment of the infrastructure required for a domestic satellite internet network. The program could also contribute to the country’s technological independence in strategic communications technologies.
The latest mission therefore represents more than another satellite launch. It forms part of a wider effort by China to expand its presence in space and develop advanced infrastructure capable of supporting digital connectivity on a national and international scale.
