China Launches Antitrust Probe into Nvidia Amid Tech Rivalry

China's Administration for Market Regulation has initiated an antitrust investigation into Nvidia, the world's top AI processor provider, amid the escalating U.S.-China technological competition in the AI sector, which both countries consider crucial for national security, according to Chinese state media reports.

The investigation centers on Nvidia's 2020 acquisition of Israeli networking company Mellanox, with Chinese authorities questioning whether the purchase potentially violates China's anti-monopoly regulations. Notably, the Chinese government had originally approved the deal, and the current report does not provide specific details about the alleged infringement.

The timing of the investigation is particularly significant, following the United States' recent announcement of a third round of semiconductor export restrictions targeting 140 Chinese companies, including chip equipment manufacturers. Beijing has strongly condemned these restrictions, responding with its own export controls on key technological components.

Nvidia's market performance remains relatively stable, with the company's stock experiencing a slight dip of less than 2% in pre-market trading. Despite this investigation, Nvidia's shares have been a top performer this year, surging nearly 200% due to the explosive demand for AI chips.

Founded in 1993, Nvidia has established itself as a prominent developer of graphics processing units (GPUs), graphics cards, AI solutions, high-performance computing, and system-on-chip products across various industries. The current antitrust probe underscores the intensifying technological tensions between the United States and China in the critical AI and semiconductor sectors.
