Royal vision and strategic continuity: Key insights from Nasser Bourita’s interview on 2M
Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, granted an exclusive interview to national broadcaster 2M following the United Nations Security Council’s decision to renew its endorsement of the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a credible foundation for a lasting political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
The resolution, adopted on October 31 with eleven votes in favor, none against, and three abstentions, represents a significant diplomatic milestone. Algeria, a key actor in the matter, opted not to participate in the vote, a move that highlights shifting regional alignments.
The central role of HM King Mohammed VI
Bourita stressed that Morocco’s diplomatic achievements stem from the leadership and sustained engagement of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. He noted that the growing international support for the autonomy plan is a direct result of the King’s active involvement with world leaders, describing his efforts as both personal and daily. The minister revealed that “His Majesty’s direct interventions were decisive in securing the consensus within the Security Council.”
He also commented on Moscow’s stance, explaining that Russia’s decision not to use its veto reflected respect for both the Sovereign and Morocco.
A diplomacy defined by seriousness
The minister portrayed Moroccan diplomacy as a disciplined and pragmatic process built on patience and credibility. “Seriousness commands respect,” he stated, adding that Morocco is a country of action, not declarations.
Bourita recalled the King’s visits to nine African nations, positioning the Sahara issue within a broader continental vision. He emphasized that this strategic clarity was central to Morocco’s consistent diplomatic success.
In an unprecedented disclosure, he revealed that forty-five amendments were proposed to the draft resolution between October 4 and the final vote, yet none challenged Morocco’s core position. This, he said, demonstrated the strength and coherence of the Moroccan approach.
Toward a lasting settlement
When asked about future prospects, Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s readiness to reach a definitive settlement through dialogue. He underscored that the UN’s latest resolution confirmed the “relevance and legitimacy” of Morocco’s position and reiterated Rabat’s call for direct talks with Algeria.
For the minister, the Security Council’s endorsement is not just a procedural victory but an acknowledgment of a long-term strategy implemented with consistency and discipline under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
