SpaceX launches three communications satellites into orbit
SpaceX has successfully launched three communications satellites belonging to SES into orbit, adding another mission to the company’s increasingly busy launch schedule in 2026.
The satellites were carried aboard a Falcon 9 rocket that lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The mission placed three spacecraft from SES’s O3b mPOWER constellation into medium Earth orbit, expanding a satellite network designed to provide high-capacity connectivity to customers in different parts of the world.
Following liftoff, the Falcon 9’s first stage completed its role and returned to Earth, landing on an autonomous drone ship positioned in the Atlantic Ocean. The successful recovery highlights SpaceX’s continued reliance on reusable rocket technology, which has become a central part of the company’s launch strategy.
While the booster returned to Earth, the rocket’s upper stage continued its flight and deployed the three satellites according to the planned mission timeline.
Each O3b mPOWER satellite weighs approximately 1,700 kilograms. The spacecraft are part of SES’s next-generation satellite communications system, which operates in medium Earth orbit and is designed to deliver high-performance connectivity for governments, businesses and other customers.
The latest mission also marked another step in the deployment of the O3b mPOWER constellation. SpaceX has been responsible for launching all of the satellites in the system so far, using six Falcon 9 missions beginning in December 2022.
SES has been expanding the constellation as part of its broader strategy to provide flexible and high-speed connectivity through a combination of satellite technologies and orbital systems. The O3b mPOWER network is intended to complement SES’s other satellite assets and support applications requiring reliable data capacity.
For SpaceX, the launch represents another milestone in an exceptionally active year. The company has now carried out 107 Falcon 9 orbital missions in 2026, in addition to two missions conducted with its larger Falcon Heavy rocket.
The growing launch frequency demonstrates the scale of SpaceX’s commercial and institutional operations. Reusable Falcon 9 boosters have allowed the company to conduct frequent missions while reducing the time and resources required to prepare hardware for subsequent flights.
The continued deployment of communications satellites is also contributing to a rapidly changing global space industry. Demand for satellite connectivity has increased as governments, telecommunications companies and businesses seek alternatives and additional capacity for broadband and data services.
The O3b mPOWER system is particularly significant because its medium Earth orbit configuration is designed to combine broad coverage with lower latency than traditional geostationary satellite systems. This makes it suitable for applications that require substantial data capacity and responsive connections.
With satellite operators continuing to expand their networks and launch providers increasing flight frequency, the commercial space sector is becoming increasingly competitive. SpaceX’s reusable launch infrastructure has positioned the company as a major player in this expanding market.
The latest SES mission therefore represents both a commercial satellite deployment and another demonstration of SpaceX’s ability to conduct frequent orbital launches while recovering and reusing key rocket components.
