German union announces strike at Berlin airport over pay dispute
The German services workers' union Verdi has called for a strike at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on Wednesday amid ongoing disputes over wages and working conditions with public-sector employers.
The union said in a statement that during the second round of negotiations, the employers presented a pay offer that the Verdi bargaining committee deemed unacceptable. As a result, the strike is intended to put pressure on authorities and employers to improve the proposed terms for airport staff.
The industrial action is expected to affect flights, passenger services, and airport operations. Deutsche Lufthansa AG, one of the major airlines operating at Berlin's airport, may face delays and cancellations depending on the number of employees participating in the strike.
Verdi represents a wide range of workers in Germany’s service sector, including employees in airports, public transportation, and municipal services. Labor observers note that strikes remain a key tool for unions in Germany to negotiate better wages and working conditions.
Passengers are advised to check with airlines for updates and prepare for potential disruptions on the day of the strike.
