Trump launches $500 billion initiative for AI development
US President Donald Trump has revealed an ambitious new project aimed at investing up to $500 billion into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The initiative, named Project Stargate, is a collaboration between major tech companies and a Japanese investment firm.
The project was introduced alongside the leaders of OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, who have committed a combined $100 billion in initial funding, with an additional $400 billion expected over the next four years. Trump described the initiative as a significant step toward maintaining the US's lead in AI technology, particularly in competition with China.
The project will focus on constructing data centers, with the first ones already underway in Texas. Up to 20 data centers are planned, each covering 500,000 square feet, to meet the computational needs of advanced AI systems. Trump highlighted that this initiative is expected to create over 100,000 jobs nationwide.
OpenAI, the creator of the widely-used ChatGPT model, has also identified key partners such as Arm, Microsoft, and NVIDIA for the project. OpenAI emphasized its goal of developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity. AGI represents a future form of AI that can perform a broad array of tasks, unlike current models that are designed for specific functions. However, experts have raised concerns about the potential risks of AGI for society.
In a significant policy shift, Trump also reversed an executive order from former President Joe Biden that sought to address AI-related risks.
