Macron to address nation amid global uncertainty
French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to speak to the nation on Wednesday at 8 p.m. local time, following a post on social media platform X. He stated that, during this period of uncertainty and major global challenges, he would address the public.
The announcement comes as European Union leaders prepare for a summit on defense and Ukraine, set for Thursday. European nations are intensifying efforts to increase defense spending and strengthen support for Ukraine, which is engaged in a conflict with Russian forces. This push is driven by rising concerns about the commitment of the U.S. administration to Europe's defense.
In a recent move, U.S. President Donald Trump paused military aid to Kyiv, signaling a shift in U.S. policy toward a more conciliatory approach with Russia. In response, France is working to rebuild ties between the U.S. and Ukraine, with the goal of securing a "lasting and robust peace," according to government spokesperson Sophie Primas.
Earlier this week, France and Britain proposed a partial one-month truce between Russia and Ukraine, focusing on air, sea, and energy infrastructure, though ground fighting would continue. This proposal is part of broader European diplomatic efforts to maintain Western support for Ukraine following a tense meeting between President Zelensky and President Trump.
