Britain sanctions Israeli far-right ministers over Gaza comments
On June 10, Britain, along with allies including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway, imposed sanctions on two Israeli far-right ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. The UK's foreign ministry cited their "repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities" as the reason for the sanctions, which include asset freezes and travel bans.
British Foreign Minister David Lammy stated that both ministers have encouraged extremist violence and serious human rights abuses against Palestinians, emphasizing that such actions are intolerable. This coordinated effort aims to hold those accountable for their provocations.
In response, Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the sanctions as "outrageous," indicating that the Israeli government would convene to discuss its response. Smotrich, during the inauguration of a new settlement in the Hebron Hills, expressed disdain for Britain's actions, claiming that the country has previously attempted to impede Israeli settlement efforts.
The UK and its European allies have been increasing pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration to lift the blockade on aid entering Gaza, where experts warn of impending famine. Despite the sanctions, the joint statement from the allies emphasized their ongoing commitment to a strong friendship with Israel, highlighting shared values and security interests. They also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and a pathway to a two-state solution.
