Zohran Mamdani, 34, becomes New York’s first Muslim mayor in setback for Trump
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old progressive and outspoken critic of Donald Trump, has been elected mayor of New York City after a decisive victory over former state governor Andrew Cuomo. His win marks a historic moment, as he becomes the city’s first Muslim mayor and one of the youngest to ever hold the position.
The announcement sparked celebrations across Brooklyn, where hundreds of supporters gathered to cheer his victory. “In this time of political darkness, New York will be the light,” Mamdani said in his victory speech, promising to “build a city that stands firm against antisemitism and inequality.”
Mamdani, born in Uganda to Indian parents and naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2018, ran on a platform centered on affordable housing, public transport, and social equity. His proposals, which include rent controls and free childcare, have been described as social democratic rather than radical.
Former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama congratulated him, calling his victory “a sign of renewed hope.” Meanwhile, Donald Trump reacted sharply on his Truth Social platform, blaming Republican losses on the ongoing budget shutdown and his absence from the ballot.
The election saw record voter turnout, with more than two million New Yorkers heading to the polls — the highest participation in nearly six decades. Mamdani’s rise also galvanized younger voters and disillusioned citizens seeking political renewal.
