Zelenskyy appoints security chief to lead new Ukrainian peace negotiation team

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Rustem Umerov, head of the National Security and Defense Council, to lead Ukraine’s delegation in upcoming peace negotiations, according to a decree published on Saturday.

The decision replaces Andriy Yermak, the former chief of the presidential administration, who was dismissed earlier this week following corruption allegations. The new decree states that Umerov will head the team participating in talks with the United States and other international partners.

Zelenskyy confirmed that discussions with Washington are scheduled for late next week. The delegation includes Commander-in-Chief Andriy Hnatov, along with senior representatives from the Foreign Ministry, intelligence agencies, and the National Security and Defense Council.

The renewed diplomatic push comes after recent talks in Geneva between Ukrainian and US officials over a draft peace framework. President Donald Trump said that “something positive” may be emerging from the negotiation process but stressed that real progress should be measured through concrete outcomes.

As the war continues with no definitive end in sight, Ukraine approaches the fourth anniversary of the conflict’s escalation in February.
