Widespread Disruptions Hit Spanish Airports Amid Global IT Outage

Madrid, July 19, 2024 — Spanish airports are experiencing significant disruptions due to a massive IT outage affecting numerous companies worldwide, according to Aena, the Spanish airport operator.

"Due to an incident in the computer system, disruptions are occurring in Aena's systems and at airports across Spain," the company announced via social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), warning of potential delays.

Tech company Microsoft reported on Friday that it had initiated measures to address an outage impacting many businesses and airlines. This global technical issue primarily affects passenger check-in and information systems, Aena noted, adding that some operations are being performed manually while the problem is being resolved.

"We continue to work with all concerned parties to remedy this situation as soon as possible," stated Aena, which is 51% owned by the Spanish government.

Aena, the world's leading airport operator in terms of passenger numbers, manages over 60 airports, including 46 in Spain. Spain is the second most visited tourist destination globally, following France. Last year, Aena handled the transportation of 283 million passengers.

Numerous IT outages were reported earlier in the day in various countries, particularly in airports. Microsoft announced on X that it was taking "mitigation measures" after the outage affected several of its client companies.

As the situation develops, passengers are advised to stay informed via official channels and to prepare for possible delays.
