Visually impaired man dies after falling onto Paris metro tracks

A tragic incident occurred Tuesday night on the Paris metro, resulting in the death of a visually impaired man. The 42-year-old, using a white cane, fell onto the tracks at Denfert-Rochereau station on Line 6 around 11:30 p.m. while heading towards Charles de Gaulle Étoile.

According to early reports from police and judicial sources, the victim mistakenly believed that a train had already stopped at the platform and stepped forward, falling in front of the arriving train. Surveillance footage shows him approaching the platform edge, likely trying to locate a door after hearing a train in the opposite direction.

The RATP confirmed the incident as a “serious accident involving a person” and activated its support unit for victims. Emergency services were unable to revive the man after he was extracted from the tracks. A formal investigation into the causes of the accident has been opened by the 14th arrondissement police.

RATP expressed its condolences to the family and provided assistance to the train operator, who was deeply shocked by the event.
