Var council President fined for illegal conflict of interest

Jean-Louis Masson, president of the Var Departmental Council and member of Les Républicains, was fined €15,000 for illegal conflict of interest during his tenure as mayor of La Garde, near Toulon. The court did not impose a disqualification from holding office.

The Toulon criminal court ruled Friday that Masson had participated in votes on ten council decisions involving two private companies he chaired and from which he received remuneration, raising questions about a direct personal financial interest.

Masson, 71, defended his actions in court, claiming he never felt he was voting against public interest. His lawyer welcomed the decision, emphasizing the exceptional circumstances of the case and Masson’s clean criminal record. The court considered these factors in deciding against disqualification.

Opposition representatives expressed satisfaction that Masson had been held accountable, highlighting the importance of judicial oversight in public office. Masson has not yet decided whether to appeal the ruling.
