USAID Unveils Cooperative Resilience Program to Fortify Moroccan Communities Against Climate Change

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to empower Moroccan cooperatives and entrepreneurs in their battle against the mounting challenges posed by climate change. Samantha Power, the Administrator of USAID, announced the launch of the Cooperative Resilience Program during her visit to Morocco, which commenced on May 19 and will conclude on May 22.

The program's unveiling took place at the esteemed Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Ben Guerir, where Power commended Morocco's proactive efforts in addressing climate-related issues. The Cooperative Resilience Program is a collaborative endeavor involving UM6P, GiveDirectly, and Morocco's National Initiative for Human Development. Its mission is to equip over 1,000 cooperatives and entrepreneurs with the necessary resources and knowledge to implement climate adaptation solutions.

Addressing the attendees, Power emphasized the program's focus on supporting cooperatives and entrepreneurs, especially women and young people, through the provision of cash grants and technical assistance. "This program supports Moroccan cooperatives and entrepreneurs, especially women and young people, to grow their businesses and to build their resilience to climate shocks," she stated.

Morocco's climate struggles are well-documented, with the nation grappling with six consecutive years of drought and rising temperatures, severely impacting its freshwater resources and agricultural productivity. Despite these challenges, Power applauded Morocco's proactive approach to climate adaptation, stating, "What is so inspiring about being here in Morocco is seeing that the Moroccan people are not simply cursing the darkness or cursing the heat. They are doing something, they are taking action to face these challenges."

During her visit, Power engaged with students from the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, gaining insights into their research on developing drought and heat-tolerant crops. Additionally, she met with leaders of Moroccan cooperatives, who shared their efforts to create climate-resilient local products and employment opportunities.

At the event, Power elaborated on the program's objectives, stating, "UM6P will work with cooperative members and entrepreneurs to provide vital, in-person training to learn about climate solutions like water conservation, crop diversification, and recycling." Furthermore, the financial support provided through GiveDirectly will enable participants to acquire essential inputs and tools, reducing barriers to climate adaptation finance.

Recognizing Morocco's ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030, Power praised the nation's climate action endeavors, stating, "Already, Morocco is recognized globally for its climate action efforts. Now, Morocco is advancing its commitment even further."

In her concluding remarks, Power reaffirmed the US' dedication to supporting Morocco's climate initiatives, stating, "We at USAID, on behalf of the American people and the U.S. government, are eager to do everything that we can to support this vital effort."

With the Cooperative Resilience Program, USAID aims to empower Moroccan communities to confront the challenges posed by climate change, fostering resilience and promoting sustainable practices through collaborative efforts and capacity-building initiatives.
