US-Iraq Joint Operation Eliminates 15 ISIS Militants in Anbar Desert

In a significant blow to the Islamic State group, a joint operation conducted by the US military and Iraqi forces has resulted in the deaths of at least 15 militants in the Anbar desert. The operation, which took place on Thursday, also saw seven American troops injured, according to a statement from the US military’s central command.

The militants were reportedly armed with an array of weapons, including grenades and explosive belts, indicating a high level of preparedness and potential threat. The operation was aimed at disrupting and degrading the Islamic State group’s (ISIS) ability to plan and execute attacks against both Iraqi civilians and US citizens, as well as allies and partners in the region and beyond.

Central command emphasized that the operation was successful in targeting key ISIS leaders, further undermining the group’s operational capabilities. Iraqi security forces have continued to exploit the locations raided, ensuring that no civilian casualties were reported.

An Iraqi military statement detailed the operation, stating that airstrikes initially targeted the militants’ hideouts, followed by an airborne assault. The statement confirmed that among the dead were key ISIS leaders, although their identities were not disclosed. All hideouts, weapons, and logistical support were destroyed, and important documents, identification papers, and communication devices were seized.

A US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that some American troops were wounded during the operation, with two others sustaining injuries from falls. All personnel are reported to be in stable condition.

The delay in acknowledging the US role in the raid has raised questions, as Iraq initially did not mention US involvement. This comes amid ongoing debates in Iraq about the future presence of American troops in the country.

The Islamic State group, once a formidable force that controlled vast territories across Iraq and Syria, has been significantly weakened since its peak. However, the group continues to operate in remote areas like the Anbar desert, posing a persistent threat. The coalition of over 80 countries, led by the US, has been instrumental in combating ISIS, which lost its territorial hold in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019. Despite these setbacks, ISIS remains active, claiming responsibility for attacks globally, including the particularly brutal assaults carried out by its branch in Afghanistan.
