Unraveling the Terror Network: Morocco Leads Cross-Border Operation to Dismantle ISIS Support Structure

In a remarkable demonstration of international collaboration, Morocco took the lead in a comprehensive counterterrorism operation that successfully dismantled an ISIS support network spanning three continents.

The operation, codenamed "MIYA," was initiated in 2021 by Spain's National Police General Commissariat for Information (CGI) and involved meticulous coordination among 12 countries. Morocco's General Territorial Surveillance Direction (DGST) played a crucial role in this endeavor.

Collaborating seamlessly, law enforcement agencies thwarted the nefarious plans of ISIS operatives who were plotting attacks in Europe. Subsequently, four suspects were apprehended in Spain and are now facing terror charges.

This security triumph underscores the effectiveness of global cooperation in counterterrorism, achieved through relentless effort and strategic precision that systematically dismantled extremist networks.

The CGI investigation uncovered a suspect of North African origin in Spain collaborating with a jihadist who had entered Europe with the intention of executing an attack in France. Prompt action neutralized the imminent threat.

Simultaneous arrests in Switzerland and Spain, along with thorough investigation, exposed an international ISIS support network spanning Afghanistan, the Middle East, Sahel, Maghreb, and Europe.

The network's intricate terror financing methods, including sophisticated cryptocurrency transactions, were brought to light. However, Operation MIYA significantly disrupted these activities, impeding ISIS' infrastructure and attack preparations.

The dismantling of recruitment and radicalization channels delivered a significant blow to the terror group's European, Middle Eastern, and North African operations.

This year's consecutive counterterror victories, marked by over 50 arrests in 22 strategic interventions, showcase the unwavering global determination and airtight security coordination necessary to confront the persistent terrorist threat.
