United Kingdom rejects US warning over under-16 social media ban

The United Kingdom has rejected a warning from the White House opposing plans to restrict social media access for children under the age of 16. The US administration submitted a response to a British public consultation through its embassy in London, arguing that such measures could limit free expression and place a disproportionate burden on American technology companies.

The intervention comes as the British government prepares to finalise its approach to online safety for children. Officials are considering new rules that would tighten access to social platforms for minors, with a policy announcement expected in the coming days. The proposals form part of a broader effort to regulate digital environments used by children and teenagers.

Liz Kendall, the secretary of state for digital policy, dismissed the US position and said the government would not be influenced in what it considers necessary to protect children. She pointed to consultation data showing that the vast majority of participating parents support stronger restrictions. She also confirmed that a full ban remains under consideration as legislation moves forward.

The policy under discussion is expected to be more targeted than blanket bans seen elsewhere. Platforms may face different levels of restriction depending on age groups and features. Educational services such as child-focused video platforms could be exempt, while tighter controls are being examined for chat functions, artificial intelligence tools, and gaming interactions involving strangers. The government has received tens of thousands of responses and aims to complete legislation by the end of the year, even as diplomatic tensions with Washington continue to grow.
