UN General Assembly opens a high-stakes diplomatic week in New York

World leaders are preparing to gather at United Nations headquarters in New York for the high-level week of the 81st session of the General Assembly, with the annual General Debate scheduled from September 22 to 28, 2026. The meetings come at a time when conflicts, climate pressures, development challenges and rapid technological change are placing renewed attention on international cooperation.

The 81st session is being led by General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.” The theme reflects the session’s focus on strengthening multilateral cooperation while addressing interconnected global challenges.

Peace and international security are expected to feature prominently during the diplomatic meetings in New York. Heads of state, government officials and ministers will use the General Debate to present their priorities and discuss responses to conflicts and other international crises. The broader high-level program also includes meetings focused on development, climate action, sea-level rise and pandemic preparedness.

Sustainable development remains another major issue on the agenda as countries approach the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN’s 2026 assessment shows that, among 139 targets for which trend data are available, 36 percent are either on track or making moderate progress, while 49 percent are moving too slowly and 15 percent have fallen below their 2015 baseline. The figures highlight the scale of the remaining challenges in areas such as poverty, food security, health, education and access to essential services.

Climate action will also receive high-level attention. A dedicated meeting on climate action and a just transition is scheduled for September 23, while another high-level meeting on the threats posed by rising sea levels is planned for September 24. These discussions are expected to address emissions reduction, adaptation, energy transition and the financial needs of countries facing greater climate-related risks.

Digital transformation and artificial intelligence have also become increasingly important to the UN agenda. Discussions around technology are expected to focus on how AI can contribute to development while addressing concerns related to data, unequal access, reliability and governance. The UN’s 2026 SDG monitoring report notes that the rapid expansion of AI is creating new challenges for the production and use of trusted information and official statistics.

The week also takes place against the backdrop of the upcoming selection of the next UN secretary-general. António Guterres’ second term ends on December 31, 2026, making the succession process a major institutional issue during the current session. In the third informal Security Council straw poll held on September 18, Costa Rican candidate Rebeca Grynspan received nine “encourage” votes, while Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett received eight. The poll is informal and does not constitute a formal recommendation.

The eventual selection will require a recommendation from the Security Council followed by a formal appointment by the General Assembly. The five permanent members of the Security Council have veto powers, making the search for broad agreement an important part of the process.

Beyond the formal speeches, the high-level week provides an opportunity for governments to hold bilateral and multilateral meetings on issues ranging from security and development to climate policy, health and emerging technologies. The UN describes the General Debate as a central forum for member states to discuss global issues and seek collective approaches to interconnected challenges.

With a wide-ranging agenda covering peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, public health and technological governance, the 81st General Assembly places international cooperation at the center of discussions in New York.
