UN chief warns of “real risk” of Ukraine conflict spreading
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Wednesday of a “real risk” that the war in Ukraine could spread beyond its borders. The statement came after Polish authorities reported the interception of Russian drones that had entered their territory.
“This episode once again highlights the regional impact and the real danger of escalation in this devastating conflict,” said UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing.
The incident in eastern Poland underscored growing concerns that the war, now in its third year, could draw neighboring countries more directly into the fighting. NATO allies, including Poland, have repeatedly expressed alarm over the spillover effects of Russian missile and drone strikes near their borders.
