U.S.-Turkish Protester Killed by Israeli Forces in West Bank Clash: IDF's Investigation and International Reactions
In a tragic incident on September 6, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old US-Turkish national, was killed by Israeli military fire during a protest in Beita, a town near Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Eygi was participating in a demonstration against the expansion of Jewish settlements when she was struck by gunfire from Israeli troops.
Following local reports and an ensuing investigation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the military has concluded it is "highly likely" that Eygi was unintentionally hit by IDF fire directed at what was described as the main instigator of the riot. The IDF expressed deep regret over the incident, stating that Eygi was not the intended target.
The U.S., a close ally of Israel, responded strongly to the findings. Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the killing, asserting that Eygi's death was “unprovoked and unjustified.” He emphasized that no one should face lethal force merely for participating in a protest. The White House also expressed sorrow over the incident, calling it a "tragic loss." Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the action as "barbaric."
The IDF's statement characterized the incident as occurring amidst a "violent riot," during which Palestinians allegedly burned tires and threw rocks at security forces. However, Eygi's protest group refuted these claims, asserting that their demonstration was peaceful.
Eygi was affiliated with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a pro-Palestinian organization known for its weekly demonstrations against Israeli settlements. This protest was reportedly Eygi’s first with the ISM.
The incident has drawn significant international attention and condemnation, highlighting ongoing tensions and the complex dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
