U.S. shapes robotics response as China leads humanoid production

The Trump administration is exploring an executive order on robotics set for 2026, amid reports of intensifying efforts to counter China's rapid strides in humanoid robot manufacturing. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has engaged robotics industry leaders and voiced strong commitment to speeding up U.S. development, while the Department of Transportation gears up to launch a dedicated robotics working group by year's end.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk highlighted ambitious plans during the company's latest earnings call, targeting production of thousands of Optimus humanoid robots by late 2025 and ramping to full scale in early 2026. The third-generation model stands ready for high-volume manufacturing, though it lingers in prototype form. Musk projected annual output could hit one million units within five years, with prices ranging from $20,000 to $30,000 each.

Industry observers note China's edge in humanoid momentum. Jeff Burnstein, president of the Association for Advancing Automation, admitted this after visiting the Humanoids Summit expo, underscoring the competitive gap as U.S. firms push to catch up.
