Two skiers killed in separate avalanches in Savoie
Two skiers lost their lives on Sunday after being caught in two separate avalanches in the French department of Savoie, highlighting once again the dangers posed by unstable snow conditions in the Alps.
The incidents occurred in different mountainous areas, according to emergency services. In both cases, the skiers were swept away by sudden snow slides while practicing off-piste skiing. Despite rapid intervention by rescue teams, the victims could not be saved.
Authorities have not released further details about the identities of the victims or the exact circumstances of the avalanches. However, officials reminded winter sports enthusiasts that avalanche risks remain high in several alpine zones due to recent weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and fluctuating temperatures.
Rescue services urged skiers and mountaineers to strictly follow safety guidelines, check avalanche forecasts, and carry appropriate safety equipment when venturing beyond marked slopes.
