Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar launches production facility in Morocco

Turkish defense manufacturer Baykar has officially announced the establishment of a drone production facility in Morocco, marking a pivotal moment in the country's military and technological advancement. The project further strengthens the growing strategic partnership between Morocco and Türkiye.

The facility, operated under the newly formed subsidiary Atlas Defense, will focus on manufacturing, maintenance, and design of drones. Based in Rabat, Atlas Defense will play a key role in developing advanced technological systems for the defense sector, covering areas such as surveillance, reconnaissance, and communications. The production line will also include the assembly of electronic, optical, and mechanical equipment integral to military operations.

This announcement comes after earlier reports confirmed Baykar’s delivery of Bayraktar TB2 drones to Morocco, with initial shipments taking place as early as September 2021. The move reflects Morocco’s broader strategy of modernizing its military arsenal through collaborations with global defense partners, including the United States.

Morocco, recognized as one of Africa’s largest arms purchasers, has allocated over 133 billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately $13 billion) to its military budget this year. This increase underscores the nation's commitment to bolstering its national security and maintaining its position as a key player in the region.

According to the latest Global Firepower rankings, Morocco holds the 59th spot globally out of 145 countries in terms of military strength and ranks seventh in Africa, following nations such as Egypt, Algeria, and South Africa.

The establishment of Baykar's production facility not only signals Morocco’s emergence as a technological hub but also reinforces its role as a leader in drone innovation across North Africa and the Middle East.
