Trump dismisses top US military leaders in unprecedented shake-up
The President Donald Trump has initiated a significant overhaul of the US military leadership, dismissing several high-ranking officers, including the nation’s top military commander. This sweeping move has led to the firing of Air Force General CQ Brown, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the highest-ranking general in the US. He was also the second African American to hold the position. Additionally, Trump removed five other senior military officers, including key figures in the Navy and Air Force.
This shake-up comes as the Pentagon braces for further changes, including potential mass firings of civilian staff, a reworking of military budgets, and shifts in deployments. Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to lead the US Navy, was also removed, alongside the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff. Trump has also decided to replace the judge advocates general from the Army, Navy, and Air Force—vital positions responsible for enforcing military justice.
The president’s actions have sparked strong condemnation from Democrats, who argue that these moves undermine the professionalism and trust necessary for military success. Representative Seth Moulton and Senator Jack Reed have expressed concern that such actions are politically motivated and dangerous to national security, criticizing the focus on diversity and political loyalty over performance.
Trump had previously indicated his intention to remove "woke" generals and those he held responsible for the US military's withdrawal from Afghanistan. Meanwhile, some figures have questioned whether General Brown’s leadership role was influenced by his race, though there is no indication of anything other than merit-based selection.
In a statement, Trump thanked General Brown for his years of service but did not clarify who would replace the judge advocates general.
