Trump co-signs ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand
Thailand and Cambodia signed on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur a “historic” peace agreement, under the mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump, marking a new milestone in the normalization of relations between the two Southeast Asian neighbors.
The ceremony took place on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit, in the presence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was praised for his role as a facilitator during the peace talks.
The document, titled the “Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords”, expands on the ceasefire reached last July, which brought an end to border clashes that had left dozens dead and forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
The agreement aims to establish a framework of cooperation and mutual trust, to prevent future tensions and promote regional stability.
According to sources close to the delegations, the accord also includes the creation of a joint border monitoring commission and programs for reconstruction and humanitarian assistance in the affected areas.
Several regional leaders hailed the signing as a decisive step toward lasting peace, in a region long marked by territorial disputes and political rivalries.
