Train derailment in Mexico leaves at least 13 dead and dozens injured
A passenger train derailment in southern Mexico has resulted in at least 13 deaths and nearly one hundred injuries, according to official statements released on Sunday. The accident occurred in the state of Oaxaca, where the train was carrying around 250 people.
Authorities confirmed that the lead locomotive left the tracks, causing several passenger cars to derail. Emergency services, including the armed forces and civil protection units, were deployed to assist survivors and evacuate the injured. Dozens of passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
The train was operating on the interoceanic railway corridor linking the Pacific coast to the Gulf of Mexico, a strategic route designed to transport both passengers and goods across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The line was inaugurated recently as part of a broader effort to boost economic development in southern Mexico.
Mexican officials announced that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Federal and regional authorities are coordinating efforts to assess responsibility, provide support to affected families, and restore rail services as quickly as possible.
