Tragedy Strikes Northern Nigeria: Mosque Fire Claims Lives in Family Feud

In a heart-wrenching display of violence stemming from a bitter family dispute over inheritance, a devastating incident unfolded in Kano state, northern Nigeria, leaving a path of destruction and sorrow. At least 11 worshippers tragically lost their lives, and dozens more sustained injuries following a premeditated arson attack on a mosque during dawn prayers.

The horrific scene unfolded when a 38-year-old man, identified as Shafi'u Abubakar, allegedly poured petrol inside the mosque and callously locked the doors, trapping around 40 worshippers before setting the blaze. Abubakar's actions reportedly stemmed from a longstanding family conflict over inheritance, with the suspect admitting to targeting specific family members present inside the mosque.

Eyewitnesses recount a scene of terror and desperation as flames consumed the sacred space, with trapped worshippers' cries filling the air as they struggled futilely to open the locked doors. Neighbors, alerted by the commotion and an explosion, rushed to help, only to be confronted by the inferno's ferocity.

The Kano Fire Service admitted to a regrettable delay in their response, citing a lack of immediate alert. "In such situations, people are supposed to call us, but we didn't receive any calls from the location until after things had settled down," lamented Saminu Yusuf, the service's spokesman, in a statement to the BBC.

Initially, reports mentioned only one fatality, but as time passed, the grim toll increased as more victims succumbed to their injuries while being treated at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano. The police have confirmed the loss of 11 lives, with several other victims, including children, fighting for survival in critical condition.
