Torre Pacheco rocked by racial tensions after a violent assault

The Spanish town of Torre Pacheco, in the Murcia region, is experiencing growing unrest after two consecutive nights of violent clashes between far-right groups and young people of Moroccan descent.

The spark for the violence was the brutal assault of a 72-year-old Spanish retiree, known as “domingo,” allegedly attacked by four young men of Moroccan origin. According to the civil guard, the attack was reportedly filmed for TikTok. One suspect has been arrested and investigations are ongoing.

In an already tense climate, far-right groups, especially the Vox party, have seized on the incident to fuel hatred against the Moroccan community, one of the largest in the region. Videos circulating on social media show attacks on Moroccan homes and gatherings with openly racist slogans.

The situation has raised fears of a repeat of the 2000 el ejido riots. Local NGOs are warning against dangerous generalizations, stressing the importance of distinguishing isolated incidents from the collective blame of an entire community.

Meanwhile, Moroccan authorities have remained silent, with no official statements issued so far, leaving the local Moroccan community feeling abandoned.
