Three Italian Carabinieri killed in farm explosion during eviction near Verona
Rome — Three Italian Carabinieri officers were killed and around ten other law enforcement members injured on Tuesday when a farm exploded during an eviction operation in Castel d’Azzano, south of Verona, according to the Italian Ministry of Defense and local firefighters.
Authorities believe the explosion was deliberately triggered by the farm’s three occupants — a sibling trio of farmers and livestock breeders struggling with financial hardship. During a previous eviction attempt, they had already threatened to blow up their house, investigators said.
The powerful blast completely destroyed the property, and rescue teams were still searching the debris Tuesday evening. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
